How I organize my Lego® collection
Share
Whether you're a LEGO® novice or expert, organization is essential. Over the years, I've developed a system that keeps my bricks neatly arranged and makes building and creating more enjoyable. In this post, I'll share my approach to organizing LEGO®, focusing on how I sort them by shape and sometimes by color.
Talk to any collector and they will have their own way of sorting that works best for them. I've found organization is crucial to being able to build.
Sorting by Shape
The first step in my organization process is sorting LEGO® by shape. This method involves categorizing bricks based on their size, type, and functionality. For example, I separate basic bricks like 2x4s and 2x2s from specialty pieces such as slopes, arches, and plates. By doing this, I create distinct sections in my storage space, making it easier to locate specific pieces during building sessions.
To assist me in this process, I rely on a range of storage solutions. These include stackable storage bins, compartmentalized drawers, and sorting trays. These items not only help me keep my collection organized but also save valuable time when searching for the right piece.
Organizing by Color
I sort by color only sparingly, focusing on rare colors. For example, sand blue is a relatively rare LEGO® color. I have all of my sand blue pieces together in one storage bin. For me, if I need a 2x2 sand blue brick, it's easier to sort through one bin of sand blue for it instead of a larger bin of a few thousand 2x2s. It can be like finding a needle in a haystack!
Some collectors sort every single piece by shape and by color. I just don't have the amount of storage bins for that!
In my Amazon storefront, you'll find a variety of color-coded storage containers and bins that complement this organization method perfectly. I use all of these in my LEGO® basement. These containers not only keep LEGO® sorted but also provide a visually appealing display for my collection.
All of the Akro Mils storage containers are my favorite. They are the perfect size for when parts get broken down and the drawers are removable if I want to bring one over to my workstation. I have many various sizes of these containers.
These rolling containers are also super helpful. They hold larger selections of pieces and ones like this even have some drawers that are larger for bigger pieces.
Small organizers typically used for things like jewelry-making and crafting come in very handy for LEGO®!
For pieces that I have a lot more of, these reach-in containers make it super simple.
Benefits of a Well-Organized Lego Collection
Maintaining a well-organized Lego collection offers several advantages. First, it streamlines the building process, allowing me to focus more on creativity and less on searching for pieces. Second, it enhances the overall aesthetics of my workspace, creating a tidy and inspiring environment for building and designing new creations.
Organizing Lego is a game-changer for any builder. With the right storage tools and a systematic approach, you can elevate your LEGO® experience and unleash your creativity to new heights.
